Website for Perforated Paper – Custom Ticket Generator for Shelf-Edge Labelling

At MDL Kelex, we don’t just design websites—we solve real-world problems through thoughtful digital experiences. Our latest project, Perforated Paper, is a perfect example of this. Built entirely in-house, this ecommerce website empowers customers to design and order fully custom perforated paper products, particularly for applications like shelf-edge labels, retail signage, and ticket printing—with options that go far beyond standard, off-the-shelf products.

The heart of the project is a custom-built ticket configurator tool, which enables users to create bespoke layouts for A4 perforated sheets based on their exact requirements. From ticket dimensions to perforation count, colour choice, and paper weight (GSM), everything is fully customisable, and prices update dynamically based on selections.

The Challenge

Most suppliers of perforated paper only offer a limited range of pre-cut layouts and fixed pack sizes. This causes problems for businesses in retail, logistics, and events—where shelf-edge labels and tickets often need to conform to very specific sizes or branding guidelines.

Our client wanted to break that mould. The goal was to allow customers to:

  • Choose any ticket size that fits within A4

  • Instantly see how many tickets would fit per sheet

  • Visually preview the perforation layout

  • Adjust options like colour and Paper or card weight (GSM)

  • See transparent pricing based on the configuration

  • Place an order, seamlessly, from a single page

There was no off-the-shelf plugin or theme that could do this. So we built it from the ground up.


The Solution: A Dynamic Perforation Configurator

The custom paper configurator is the core feature of the new site. Built using a combination of JavaScript, Bricks Builder, WooCommerce, and custom PHP, the tool allows users to interactively define how their perforated A4 sheet should be laid out.

Key features include:

  • Live Visual Preview: As users input ticket dimensions (e.g. 70mm x 38mm), the tool dynamically calculates how many tickets will fit within an A4 sheet, factoring in usable space and margins.

  • Automatic Grid Generation: The system draws vertical and horizontal guide lines based on the user’s inputs—no need to calculate spacing manually.

  • Ticket Count and Guide Costing: The number of vertical and horizontal cuts directly informs the pricing. This means customers see exactly what they’re paying for, with costs broken down by base sheet, perforation count, colour surcharge, and GSM surcharge.

  • Selectable Colour Swatches: A visual selector allows users to choose from a range of paper colours, with certain colours enabling or disabling specific GSM options.

  • Responsive Add-to-Cart Integration: Once configured, the sheet can be added directly to the WooCommerce cart, complete with all configuration details and price breakdown included in the order summary, cart, and emails.

Behind the scenes, we also built a full admin and sync system to manage how these configurable products are stored, priced, and fulfilled.


Why It Matters

What makes this tool special is the fact that it solves a highly specific, technical manufacturing problem via a streamlined and user-friendly digital experience. Rather than relying on customers to download templates, email specifications, or wait for manual quotes, the configurator allows anyone—from print resellers to retail buyers—to generate exactly what they need in seconds.

In an industry where turnaround time and precision matter, this approach dramatically improves efficiency. It also enables the business to:

  • Accept orders for layouts not available anywhere else

  • Automate the quoting and ordering process

  • Scale production by batching similar layouts

This is digital transformation in action—solving production bottlenecks with a clever, browser-based interface.
